The demand for selfie centric phones is pushing the manufacturers to take out the innovation out of their pandora box. Competitors such as Vivo and Oppo are whooing their customers by presenting innovation with every upgrade.
Asus has a couple of ‘selfie-centric’ smartphones like Zenfone Live, which allows for live streaming on Facebook, etc directly via phone’s camera app. With Asus Zenfone 4 selfie Pro, I was fairly impressed with Asus’ implementation of a dual-pixel sensor. Asus is coming up with things lot differently in the area of selfie cameras, which could help set it apart from other companies’ offerings. Its immediate competition would be Vivo V7+ (Review), which is another recently introduced selfie-centric phone.
Looks, design, and build quality:
Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro comes with a metal body and it feels very smooth and premium. The antenna lines running at top and bottom presents the phone similarity with iPhone look. Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro doesn’t come under the category of the bezel-less phone hence there is a good amount of space above and below the screen. The finger sensor which doubles up as the home button is placed at the bottom of the 5.5-inch Full HD display adding extra charm to the smartphone. Both power button and volume keys on the right are conveniently placed for single-handed operation, whereas the SIM card tray is located on the left. The 5.5-inch full-HD AMOLED display offers very good color saturation, without going overboard. Viewing angles are good and it performs decently under sunlight too. It is quite slim at 7 mm thickness and weighs around 145 grams and the phone feels very light in hand.
Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro specifications and features:
It comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset which houses an octa-core Cortex A53 processor clocked at 2.0 GHz along with Adreno 506 GPU. This is paired with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. This has become a standard spec listing for most mid-range devices this year. The Selfie Pro 4 also sees a shift to ZenUI 4.0, which is based on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Compared to its earlier iteration, ZenUI 4.0 is leaner and has a few design improvements. Asus has brought down the number of preinstalled apps from 35 to 13. Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger are pre-loaded. The reduction of a number of pre-installed apps is really a welcome move. We get a Themes app and Mobile Manager, which lets us manage junk files, data usage, etc. Selfie Master is a launcher which lets you jump to the front camera for stills or video, create a collage or slideshow, or enter the BeautyLive mode.
SOS feature is quite useful. One can set up the SOS feature and 3 press on the home button will alert the designated person with SMS and Google location.
Page Marker adds a floating marker in Chrome, which lets you save Web pages for reading later and offers a ‘reader mode’ for articles. This feature is quite handy and brings a clutter-free page for readers.
What is Twin Apps and how does it work?
Twin Apps is a new ZenUI application that allows one device to simultaneously log into two different accounts of the same social media or gaming platform. For example, if you have two accounts on Facebook, WeChat, or other social media or gaming platforms, you can create a copy of the app and log in with your second account within that same platform.
This sleek phone comes with a pack of 3000mAh battery. A single charge manages well for a day. The fast charging support in this variant is an additional advantage for the user. It comes with a 10W charger which is small and looks pretty.
The highlight of Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is the front-facing camera, rather the dual front-facing cameras. There is a lot of confusion that whether it features 24 MP front camera or not.If you pay a bit more attention to the marketing material, you’ll notice ‘DuoPixel’ along with the 24-megapixel resolution and that’s because it’s essentially a shooting mode which simulates a 24-megapixel sensor. So it doesn’t feature 24MP camera but Asus camera technology takes pictures of really high quality. The USP of this phone i.e. dual camera lens is actually in the limelight.
The main selfie camera on ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro features ƒ/1.8 aperture lens and the latest Sony Exmor RS IMX362 image sensor. ASUS claims to provide superior camera performance with its ‘SuperPixel Engine’ that controls sensor light sensitivity and reduces image noise. The second front sensor has a 5 MP,120-degree field of view for group selfies. The claim by Asus that Duopixel technology makes 24 MP photos similar to 24MP Photos enhancing the detail. Though this does some improvement its not always suggestable to switch on this feature as it takes time to process every time you take pictures. Our verdict about the front-facing cameras is ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro is able to achieve twice (2x) the light sensitivity of a typical smartphone camera and no doubt these pair of front-facing cameras delivers pleasing selfies for your social needs.
The rear camera is 16MP and offers decent capture in all lighting conditions. It’s also fast enough to focus and doesn’t take very long to process photos. You can expect a decent amount of details in daylight, while night shots won’t be completely spoiled by noise, and filters can still do wonders with them. Like the front camera, the rear camera shoots on auto-HDR without lag, and HDR’s impact is quite impressive. The portrait mode for both the front facing and the rear-facing camera really gives an amazing picture. Added to that if you switch on the beauty mode, the result is awesome.
In short, one can do a lot of experiments while shooting pictures and selfies and we were fully satisfied with the performance. The capability of cameras to shoot 4K videos is an attraction for V-loggers. That’s right, you can vlog in 4K resolution and the quality is very good, as long as you have good light around. 4K video on the rear camera is also very good. There’s a Selfie Master app which lets you adjust the beauty mode in photo, video or live streaming mode. The Pro mode lets you have manual control of the camera over settings such as focus mode, shutter speeds, ISO, exposure and white balance.
Audio Speaker and Performance:
We used the phone for a week and day-to-day usage was pretty handsome. The call quality was quite awesome and was pretty loud and clear on both sides.
I was quite impressed with the audio quality of this phone. Talking about the audio quality of the smartphone, it’s quite perfect for the music lovers. The smartphone features a 5 Magnet loud-speaker powered by an NXP SmartAmp, which ensures you get high devotion audio even at the highest volumes possible. The Audio Wizard function is interesting and adds some value to the music you are listening to. Bundled earphones, though not the best I have heard on, still get the work done. This phone supports Hi-Res audio so you can enjoy that if you have compatible headphones. Also, voice recording even from a distance was captured with an impressive result.
Though I am not a gaming geek but playing Asphalt 8 gave me a decent result. So it didn’t upset me on that parameter. There was no lag or anything.
Areas of improvement:
- Pre-installed apps should be completely removed so that user can install apps as per their choice
- During sunlight, the brightness of the display did the Ok performance, so this needs to be improved
- Cameras were really attractive but sometimes there was some haziness during low light
The Asus ZenFone 4 Selfie Pro comes with power packed feature and does a great job in the majority of the department. With 4K shoot mode and good quality, speakers will be an attraction for Vloggers. The dual camera in the front by far the USP of this phone. So long story short this phone has the huge potential not only for selfie lovers but also to others who want to feel premium device under this budget. For Vloggers, I think this is a deal and should not hesitate to grab this.
